Classic Swedish
Swedish massage is a soothing therapy that uses long, rhythmic, strokes to relax and rejuvenate the entire body.  The classic European technique of gently manipulating muscles tissue can help relieve pain and stress, and in combination with other health care measures, can help heal certain conditions.   Swedish massage stimulates the nervous system and increases circulation to bring relief to tight, tired muscles, often associated with vigorous exercise.  Symptoms of conditions aggravated by anxiety, such as asthma and insomnia, can often be relieved by Swedish massage and in some cases the need for medication can be reduced or even eliminated.  Swedish massage reduces stress making it an excellent supportive therapy for people suffering from psychological illnesses.  Reducing stress promotes a healthier outlook on life, gives you more energy, and decreases the risk of injury and illness.  Swedish massage can be tailored to the needs of the individual client and is an appropriate introduction to therapeutic massage.

Deep Tissue
Deep tissue massage targets the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue.  Stretching, kneading, and slow, concentrated penetration of muscle tissue can release tension and bring relief to specific types of muscle tightness, from a cramp or spasm, to a clenched jaw or "frozen" shoulder.  Other techniques work less directly but quite effectively by stimulating the nervous system and circulatory system which relaxes muscles, removes waste, and encourages healing.  Increasing circulation reduces inflammation which can help heal injuries such as tendinitis and bring nutrients to injured cells which can help limit scar formulation in new injuries and make old scar tissue more pliable.  Deep tissue massage can bring relief to joint pain and restrictive movement by stimulating the production of natural lubrication.  Deep tissue therapy is appropriate for individuals with tight, painful muscles, restricted joints, delayed muscle soreness, muscle spasms.

Sports Massage
Sports massage combines orthopedic testing and stretching with deep tissue techniques.  It is an essential addition to any athletic training program and aids in the conditioning of sport-minded individuals by increasing flexibility, improving circulation, and relieving muscle tightness.  Regular sports massage can help prevent injuries by releasing the chronic tension sometimes caused by stressing unbalanced muscle groups or by favoring, or forcing, a painful, restricted area.  In the unfortunate event of an accident or injury, sports massage can help reduce inflammation and improve circulation which aids in the removal of waste products and brings nutrients to injured cells.  Specific techniques can help heal injuries that occur over time like tennis elbow or shin splints, as well as muscle strains or ligament sprains caused by an accident.  Scar tissue around old injuries can sometimes be reduced or made more pliable by using specific massage techniques, and in new injuries, scar formation can often be limited.  Sports massage is a recommended treatment for competitive athletes, recreational athletes, and weekend warriors, and is tailored to the needs of the individual athlete both pre-and post event.

Sports massage with adaptations for the developing child is highly recommended for pediatric athletes.  Research indicates that regular sports massage better prepares the child athlete both physically and psychologically.

Pre & Post-natal
Pregnancy is a time of change, most of which are exciting and welcome.  For some, the emotional and physical changes can be challenging.  Therapeutic massage, at the hands of a knowledgeable and caring therapist, can help the mother-to-be meet these changes and challenges in a positive way.  Pre-natal massage is a wonderful way to relax, increase energy, sleep better, and relieve the pain and discomfort associated with weight gain, fluid retention, constipation, and headaches.  Massage loosens tight muscles and increases flexibility, making it easier for the body to adjust to its changing shape.  It can help relieve the pain in muscles and joints due to both added and redistributed weight.  It calms the nervous system and increases circulation to help rid the body of excess fluids and energy zapping metabolic waste and encourages the production of energy producing nutrients in the cells to boost energy and overall well-being.

In preparing for labor, massage can help reduce the stress and tension that interferes with the birthing process.  It can help relax the mother-to-be between contractions, reduce labor pain, and provide emotional support.

In the postpartum period, it is important to reduce stress and increase energy to meet the demands of caring for a newborn.  Massage is a wonderful way to deal with tension or physical discomfort, and with so much attention on the new baby, it provides a special and necessary time-out for mom.
